Basketball Court Dimensions
Whether you are just becoming interested in basketball, often find yourself watching or playing the sport, or if you’re only curious, sometimes it is beneficial to know and understand basketball court dimensions and sizes. Knowing this the size of a basketball court can not only benefit you if you are potentially planning on creating your own backyard basketball court but can also benefit your basketball knowledge in general.
There are different types of basketball courts and materials. The first two we will discuss are the main materials of courts you will probably see most often, however there are more that fit into the category as well. The first type is a hardwood court. This is the most common type of court you see in NBA and NCAA basketball facilities; and these courts typically do not require a lot of maintenance and they are very durable.
The second type of court is an asphalt or concrete court. This is the court you would see in someone’s driveway, or as a yard court, or at community parks and even parking lots where people play basketball recreationally. Another type of court is a rubber court. This type of court is typically seen with a rubber layer between the concrete portion of the court and the plastic surface to create a greater shock absorption. The final type of basketball court to discuss is a plastic, “multi-purpose” surface court. This is the kind that ensures a sturdier surface with an easier grip for playing. This type of court also offers an easy clean-up quite like the hardwood basketball courts do as well.
Now that we have gone over the different types of basketball courts, it is important to note the dimensions of the different types of courts for playing the sport.
The typical basketball court dimensions for a standard sized full court used in NBA professional basketball and college play is 94 feet long by 50 feet wide.
However, a lot of the time when someone is purchasing a basketball goal for a home, they are often thinking of a half court dimension. The basketball court dimensions of a half court used in NBA play are 47 feet long by 50 feet wide.
An international basketball court measures 92 feet long by 49 feet wide. While a middle or high school court is measured typically at 84 feet long and 50 feet wide.
The free throw line is 15 feet from the front of the backboard and is the same for all types of courts. The key or the free throw lane is 16 feet wide for NBA or FIBA and 12 feet wide for college, high school, and junior high basketball. The three-point line or arc measures 19.75 feet away from the basket in high school, 20.75 feet in NCAA, 21.65 feet to 22.15 feet in WNBA and FIBA, and 22 feet to 23.75 feet in NBA.
